Good morning. I’ve often read (not on this site, necessarily) that changing the fuel filter is not really needed as fuel is much cleaner than it has been in the past. But, as someone who is always looking for a reason to work on his car and as the replacement of the fuel filter on this model is neither time nor cost intensive, I elected to carry out this task in the spirit of preventative maintenance. Aside from some encouragement needed to get the new filter unit on, the replacement was straightforward. I followed the manual but elected not to release the pressure in the fuel system beforehand, as I did not have the tool to do so. I did end up with a fair amount of gas on my driveway. C’est la vie. I used a crowfoot to torque the fittings to spec (adjusted for the additional length of the crowfoot). A crowfoot and other offset attachments on a socket/torque wrench are less than ideal, but it got the job done.
Curious as to what a fuel filter at 105k miles looks like in this age of clean fuels, I elected to dissect the old unit and post the pictures here. Enjoy.
The flow is actually in the other direction from what is indicated by the arrow. The filter medium on the top is upstream, and the medium on the bottom is downstream.
We're on the same wavelength here as I was just planning to replace mine in the name of preventative maintenance as well given the age and likelihood of debris getting loose in the tank.
