Hello,
I have a 2005 XJ8.The glove box opens properly when you push the button but will not latch shut.
If you rapidly press the button 5 or 6 times you will hear the glove box motor operate and then you are able to close the glove box door.
Can anyone offer advice for this annoying problem.
Thank you.
Ted

use the search function.
there's a thread which explains how to readjust the latching.
It was just to open the screws , move it and tighten again...

Glove Box won't latch
Read the thread I believe you are talking about. However,The adjustment is for when one of the corners is sagging.
My problem is the electrical motor which actuates the globe box latch is not returning to the closed position after you open the glove box. Therefore, one cannot close the glovebox unless you push the glove box button a few times.
I removed the wood trim above the glove box and I can watch the motor work.
When you push the button the motor actuates to the right, opening the glovebox. And when the motor actuates to the left,it cycles the latch into the closed position
Mine is not actuating back to the left on it's own.
Has anyone run into this problem on their car?
What was the fix?
Thanks again.

You mean the glovebox should close itself when you push the button? Mine doesn't. Oh boy, something else to fix!

glove box won't close
No,it doesn't close with the button.
You push the button to open the glovebox door. The button switch actuates the glovebox motor to open the latch. When you release the button the glovebox motor actuates the linkage to the latch position so that the door can be closed. You have to physically close the door.
My problem is the motor is not reversing itself when I release the button.I must rapidly press the button until I hear the motor close the linkage. Then I can manually close the door.

Maybe you try to attach some silicone oil..
Does the mechanism switch back if you "help him" a little ?

I have had a look at the electrical diagram for this, which doesn't tell you a great deal

but there might be contacts or a microswitch associated with the motor which could

be failing.

I had a look at picture in part cataloge and workshop manual.. this doesn't help, because the locking mechanism is shown as a single part.
.. so you'll probably have to disassemble the locking mechanism.
