Hello, I seem to have a problem with the catalysts of my 2003 4.2L XJ8, which seem to start falling apart internally. After >350.000 km I admit they do have a certain right to retire, but it means I need some replacement. New OEM catalysts are no longer available as far as I leant from Jaguar here in Germany, and they also would seem forbiddingly expensive.
2nd hand also seems to be extremely rare, simply due to the low production volume of the X350.
I found some cheaper direct fit replacements on eBay (e.g. Pair Catalytic Converters for Jaguar Super V8, Vanden Plas, XJ8, XJR, XK8 4.2L ) but don't really trust these to not fall apart again after a few months or light the MIL due to insufficient precious metal coating. Does anyone have a little longer term experience with replacement catalysts like the ones linked above? Maybe even positive experience?
Last option would be to refit new monoliths into the existing canning. Also not cheap as far as I found so far (1100 .. 1300€ per cat ) but in order to be sure I would need to have the sizes of the current cats. Does someone here happen to have an old one of those lying around in the garage and can give me some measures? I would need the approximate measures of the length of the first and second monolith in the can (like attached picture) plus ideally the thickness and width of the whole housing.
I also asked in the UK forum already, but so far the helpful hints there unfortunately haven‘t lead to any available catalysts.
I have a XJR and one of my Cats disintegrated and started rattling itself to bits. I fitted a second hand cat from a normally aspirated 4.2 and have had no issues with it since. Took a while to find it and the connection orientation was different, so had to cut off bits of the old one and weld onto the replacement.
Thomas, I found the one existing side from OEM now also on the jaguarlandroverclassic page. A bit over 1000 pounds to order here from Germany, so that will be benchmark. Plus of course the problem to get the second one.
paddyx350, "took a while to find" describes exactly my problem. I found someone who freshly put an X350 exhaust system into classifieds in Germany, when I directly asked about the catalysts he wrote back they had been sold in <24h and never made it to the public. So it really needs a lot of good fortune that one of these accidentally runs in front of my car but I keep looking
xalty, could you be a bit more specific, where you got these budget catalysts from Canada?
Are there any suitable CAT options available for the 4.2 S-Type that you can perhaps retrofit?
See some aftermarket options on eBay for the S-Type, so was just wondering if that might be an option for you to explore.
