Default Howling noise...

A couple of weeks ago I requested advice on a squealing/whirring type of noise that I thought was coming from the steering pump when the wheel was turned in either direction. I was wrong! The noise is more of a howling kind of noise (like in movies when there is a strong wind or storm outside and you hear the wind 'howling'). It appears to be louder on the initial start-up, but is there all the time. This evening i parked it in the garage and placed the gear shifter in 'park'. The engine was left running, hands off the steering wheel. When i blipped the throttle I could hear the howl, albeit a little faintly. Any thoughts on what it could be..?

My experience on other cars with this type of noise has predominantly been either the idler or tensioner pulleys. They have internal bearings that dry up. Replacing those fixed these noises.

If not those, then you are looking at alternator, water pump, power steering bearings going bad.

Hi Nash,
I have a similar low howl that raised and lowered with engined revs and which I put down to the gearbox.

I was a wee bit worried until I found it that if I turned off the climate control fully then the noise went away. I haven't worked out what in the system would cause the noise the follow revs but will investigate if it ever stops bl.....y raining.

Just give it a try and see if the noise goes away, you have nothing to lose

Peter

I've got the same noise while the A/C is on. My guess is that it has to do with a noisy compressor.

Good idea muddybear, but the noise is coming from glovebox area and only goes away when the whole system is turned off, not just the ac.

Glove box area is where the climate control fan is located, (behind the glove box). Sounds like its bearings are dry or something. You have to remove the glove box to get at it.

Hi Fraser,
I did think the fan but it's defiantly engine revs not fan speed that changes the noise......
