Intermittent whine
Free method. I'll start again.
Nearly Free method. Take it for a "warrant of fitness". Those b'tards are getting tight and failed two of my trailers, even though my trailers only do a few k a year. Corrosion?: BS wheel bearings are enclosed.
Technology of wheel bearings hasn't changed much as far as I know. It cost half the cost of my trailer to have new wheel bearings put in, so yes, modern Kiwis whine.
I never thought of DIY. Whassat?

The technology has changed----in the old days most wheel bearings were adjustable taper roller bearings whereas today most are non adjustable sealed angular ball bearings. My experience with Subarus and on 2006 Vanden Plas is that they make a whine, increasing in volume and pitch as vehicle speed increases. Often they make noise before you can feel any looseness in the bearing.
