Default Lift Precaution

Due to the air suspension, are there special precautions to take when putting a XJR on a lift? Having winter wheels and tires installed not at the dealership. Would hope the techs know enough...but you know...

According to my Technical Notes of 2003.5, the ASM has a 'Jacking Mode' detected when the vehicle is raised, by detecting height changes at the road wheels, whilst the car is not moving, (yes, it knows that too !!). It initially tries to adjust the suspension but soon gives up and inhibits suspension levelling. This also applies when vehicle is suspended on a lift, when all four wheels drop together, but in this case, suspension levelling is inhibited immediately. System returns to normal when normal ride height is detected, or vehicle is detected as moving over 2 miles/hour

I found a couple of years ago when changing my own wheels over for the winter that the best option was to just start the car before lowering the jack, this then pumped the suspension up. Found out the hard way as when I lowered the car the car went down so low I could not get the jack out !!

I put mine on my lift all the time without any special steps.
It does sink right down when I put it on the floor again.

For safety; lower the car till all 4 wheels are on the floor, then start the car and remove the jack after the suspension is lifted.

BE SAFE!

What sort of hoist do you have and where do you position the lifting pads. I have a four poster drive on hoist but when it comes to changing wheels or brake jobs I am at a total loss where to poisition the lifting pads of my air jacks without causing damage to the aluminum construction.

Thanks I was unaware of the rear areas but does the car not require a special lifting pads to fit the fit ones ones without causing damage. It looked to me that the standard flat pad would crush the under body work somewhat, least that is what my transmission guy thought. He declined to do an transmission oil change in fear of damaging the car by lifting with his hoist.

The manual states the use of rubber pads, I have never needed them yet. I purchased a 2.5 ton jack that fits within the lift point.

The manual also states to be cautious when lifting one side to prevent the chassie from twisting.
