Default Lower Wishbone Arm Replacement

My 05 XJR has oil dripping from the pass. side lower wishbone arm main bushing. This is the smaller arm toward the front of the car. Jag service tells me the bushing has failed, it is a oil filled device, it's available only as an assby inclusive of arm & bushing and the cost to repair is $899 parts and labor.
Subsequently, I have located the part on line for $286, looked up the replacement procedure on JTIS and I'm ready to "get er done". So what's the problem? It looks so easy there must be a catch. Do any of you guys who have done this have any insite, cautions or words of wisdom?
Is there any way to avoid a complete wheel allignment after it's done?
Why can,t I buy just the oil filled bushing?

Help. Anybody?

After further search on line I have located the bushing for $34. The wishbone arm with bushing installed is $539. It appears to be a no brainer. The thing that troubles me is how easy is it to remove the old bush and install the new bush. Can it be done with a vice or is the required equipment so specialised that it's not worth the hassel?????

It would have to be a special tool and i dont think you found the bushing cause we go through this all the time will ext warranty companies. They say its avail seperatly and send us a picture, its of the stright front arm not the curved one that has the hydromount bushing. Be doubly sure you are getting the right one, jaguar doesnt even provide the special driver/reciever tools that would be required to press in n out. They only provide as an assembly. If you mark the location of the eccentric to get it back in the same spot, i wouldnt be cheap on the alignment. Manufacturering tolerances are gonna meen its probobly out of alignment when done and tires arent as cheap as an alignment. You did buy a jaguar didnt you?

Thanks BRUTAL,
I was hoping you would see my SOS. I think you have saved me a big pain in the neck.

So I am going to install the wishbone part with bushing pre installed and get Puddies allignment re done after the job.

Thus far I have owned this 05 XJR (Puddy) for 90 days and it is costing me $800 to $900 a month to get it sorted out. Not counting the 2 blown door speakers covered under Select eddition warr. It has 45,000 miles and so far it has been worth every penny in satisfaction.

However, my wife recently observed "the defination of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results" Puddy had better settle down soon or the 9th life will be up.

Brutal,

I sure wish I was in range of your dealership. Two dealers (1 in Orlando and 1 in Tampa) say that replacement of lower front wishbone is not covered by Select Eddition Warranty. Bummer!
Maybe a change of policy at Jag USA? Does it make sense to appeal? If so, who to?

So I ordered the lower front wishbone and I installed it together with a new fuel filter and I'm under the car putting the windage stuff back on. I look up at my work and it came to me that the damn wishbone I had just installed is upside down. After the air turned blue I had to redo the whole job. Took me most of a day all together. I was carefull to reset the cam mounting bolt like I found it.

I took the car, 05 XJR, out for a test run and all is good. I'll get the allignment redone next week. The only problem now is a message ctr. note that the "car is too low". It is about 3/4 inch lower in the front. I cycled the ignition sw. a few times, checked the fuses and relay associated with air suspension and the message went away. The front height remains low.

Any ideas out there?

drive it many times you screw the mind of the air suspension module when you have the car jacked up. start a few times and drive....and youre not the only one to put the arms in backwards......its not an issue till you try and turn and the tire hits the arm

Right on Brutal! Got up this a.m. and did a 24 mile errand in the car. When I returned the ride height had come up to normal, maybe even a little higher, so we have to call this a job well done in spite of the bone head move. There is no cure for stupid.
I paid $285+shipping for the wishbone so I saved myself about $600 but let me tell you, it's not the kind of thing you want to do too often laying on your garage floor.

Hay Guys,

Just wanted to report that I got Puddy's allignment redone today after the home brew lower front wishbone replacement. You will recall that I was most carefull to reset the cam bolt adjustment exactly as I found it. Well, the 4 wheel allignment report that was provided by the dealler showed that the wheel in question was in spec.
Not that I,m recommending that anybody not get a re allignment after such job, but I am saying that attention to detail can save you a trashed tire on the drive to the front end shop.

Nice to read a repair job done well and results better than expected.

And as always, we appreciate the final report to finish out a thread. Go puddles or puddy, whatever you're calling it.

Welsh at www.welshent.com. It was an OEM part with the correct part # cast into it.
