Found it under the car just before I got the intake elbow off. Nothing I took apart was under a preload so........ I did pull the EGR servo off but didn't see anything fly out.

 

Seems that the spring does go between the the EGR Servo motor and the valve because it fits perfectly. Why it there, no clue.

Recon I'll be buying a new one unless some has actually take this apart before and has successfully mated them back together. Ain't worth the headache of tearing it back down again.
