Default New Headliner Misconceptions

I just got my XJ8 back from the upholstery shop with a new headliner. The sagging of the old one was progressing quickly all over the headliner and sunroof shade. When looking for a shop to do the work, I was surprised to get quotes starting at $350 and going to $650. I was told by more than one shop that the rear window had to come out and this was the reason for the high costs. It turns out that the very experienced shop that did the work for $350 did not have to remove any glass and the headliner turned out fine. Just wanted to pass this along in case someone else is at the mercy of a high-priced glass-remover shop.

Did they match the color well?

It was not identical, but I don't have a problem with it. I have never had a headliner job match perfectly.

If they did everything it really wouldn't matter @ that point. Thanks! I am going to need one sooner or later. I'm seeing it creep in certain places. Trying not to drive with the windows open @ high speeds.

When the entire field area and sun shade is replaced, only the sun visors and pillars don't match and they just make it look like it was done on purpose, as long as the colors are complementary. I have noticed that the sun visors should have been done, one is showing some sags...oh well, easy to remove those. They must be hard to recover because they want an arm and a leg for them.

Would you mind letting us know the name of the shop that did the work?

Thanks,

Andrew

I think I read this post a week or two ago and now my headliner is falling down. I don't know what cheap glue/adhesive they used for these headliners, but this shouldn't be common. The same thing happened to my 87' XJ6. I need to find a shop to get this re-done and with the same material. I dont want the headliner sagging more and looking like I dont take care of a fine piece of machinery.

Default Headliner replacement - Suede

I just had mine replaced. The shop is VERY inexpensive $160 for just headliner. $225 for headliner with sunroof liner and what I chose $500 for Suede headliner with door trim, etc.. They are located in DFW.

It was done at Youngs Upholstery in Virginia Beach. I used the orginal type fabric.

I had mine done on Monday and it looks great. I too was told the rear window had to be removed so the headliner board wouldn't be bent. I don't know how my shop got it done, but $450 was more than half less that the $1000 quote from another referal shop here in Orlando. I am happy with it and will keep the extra dollars for the next XJ repair. :-)
