New sat nav GPS disc
Just a thought..
how about a group buy of just one disc and passing it around?
Just 10 of us could buy for $20.00 a piece ,with $4.95 to priority mail it to the next sharer.
Or, maybe a fellow member who has a new one might be willing to rent his out for a fee?

IN.
Can you copy the DVD? What is the purpose of mailing it around?
I thought I heard that the NAV system can be very finnicky with copies (different brands of discs work better than others?).

like this can often be problematic, that's why for $5.00 it is easier to mail it on.
I have not heard of many ppl having issues using the factory DVD to upgrade the system, seems straight forward.

I guess I assumed you need to have the DVD in the actual slot at all times to operate the GPS. Otherwise it will just say "missing map DVD".
If we pass it around, we will only be able to actually have the maps while the map is in our DVD slot.
Or is the purpose of passing the disc around to upgrade the firmware?

Are you SURE? Why do I keep seeing all of these images of Jaguar NAV systems that say "Map DVD missing"?

Hmmm....I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that the DVD has to be inserted for the Nav to work.
At least thats the way it is on my A6
I was lookig at a copy disc to update mine to 2011 from 2007 but have heard many stories on the silver reflective copy discs burning out the laser prematurely.
I've left well alone and I think will only update if and when pushed into a corner to do so
The disk/dvd needs to be in the system at all times for it to work, if not you will keep getting the same message on the screen, that the dvd disk is missing. So yes we would have to pass it around to burn a new one. That would be from any Jaguar from 2004 to 2008, in my case a 04 XJR. Count Me In!
I just bit the bullet and bought the 2009-2010 update from Navteq for my 04 XJ8. It took about 3 minutes to update the firmware. A few notable changes from the earlier version, in addition to whatever new streets and POI's have been added. There may be more, but it was snowing last night and I only played with it for a minute or two in my driveway. The logo screen is now black, instead of green, with "Jaguar" in a different script. "User settings" now has an option for turning on daytime running lights, which I did not have before. Map functions have changed a bit, and there's a window for narrowing address entries by "zone", which I also did not have before. I'll continue to play with it and see what else may have changed and report back. I'd be interested to know if anyone else has upgraded and, if so, what they've found. Was it worth $200? Jury's still out on that one.
Regarding doing what were thinking of doing here, a group buy and burning copies. In doing a search last night I saw that in some instances there are issues with the graphics on the screen with a burnt copy.
Honestly, I don't even use the GPS for navigating from point to point. I just use it to see where I am, and occasionally glance at sidestreets/potential detours.
The vehicle GPS is just way too cumbersome to use, even if I'm at a standstill.

Did not intend to take the thread in a different direction with my earlier post. My point is...most people, including me, have wanted to update earlier GPS DVD's. What are we gaining by the update? Additional streets and addresses, easier to use interface? Based on my very early assessment of the newest Navteq DVD, the changes, or improvements, seem rather minimal.

Guess I was mistakenly hoping for updates that bring it closer to the most basic TomTom/Garmin portables. Graphically and functionally, the Jag factory nav. system, updated DVD or not, is pretty pathetic. I do, however, like the British voice prompts.
Graphically, yes it's kinda dated. However, so are any other GPSs from that era. Heck my 2011 Honda Insight had a NAV option available (I didn't get it) that looked just as old as the one in my Jag!
