I don't know how the British Diagnostics VM is setup but I have seen SDD lock/disable stuff if the dealer name/address entered isn't valid FWIW.
If you find a file called date.bat on the desktop of Virtual Machine then clicking on that should set the VM's date back far enough that the SDD programme won't look for updates.
