Hi guys, I picked up a 2003 XJ8 this weekend and I’ve noticed that on initial startup it revs quite high (in comparison to idling at 700) at about 1400. After driving for a few mins it seems to settle. Just checking that this is a normal situation.

You could check the fuel trims in case something's a bit out (maybe a small air leak).

 

That's normal, The engine will always idle slightly higher at start-up. By how much and how long depends upon how cold/warm the engine is when being started.
