Default P0191 and P1339

Ok. My lady (2003 Super V8) left me alongside the road 2 times the past 2 weeks. Exactly the same way both occasions. And almost at the same spot. First time I’ve been driving on the highway for more than an hour when suddenly the RPM went slowly down resulting in the car losing speed. My first reaction was to apply some extra with my left foot. This resulted in an even faster decrease of RPM. When releasing the pedal the RPM climbed back to normal according the current speed. As the speed was lowering rapidly I had to end on the safety strip along the highway. So far no yellow or red lights. At that point the engine even stopped. As a being used to work with hard- and software that benefits from a reboot, I tried to restart the car. It came back on and I could drive a few 100 meters to a safer place leaving the highway. Than exactly the same happened. Then it would start, but only keeps running with hick-ups for 10sec before stopping again.

In the end the very kind people of the dutch road assistance picked me up, dropped me off at home, and brought the car to my local workshop.

The day after at the local workshop we could start the car instantly and read error P0191. When examining the connector of the fuel rail sensor it looked very worn by oxidation. We cleaned it, cleared the code and went out for a 20 minute test drive. A perfect car. I thought we fixed it.

2 weeks later I took the car for a second drive. After 18 minutes exactly the same happened on the highway. The same symptoms. So far for oxidation in the connector. After being towed to the workshop again they gave me a call today. An extra code appeared. So now we have P0191 and P1339. According the workshop the engine stopped at 700RPM as the flight recorder told them. They had contact with a jaguar dealer and he told them it is most likely the sensor that’s broken or a dirty gas-valve (or fuel valve?) I mentioned that I’ve read a lot about broken fuel pumps, but that was unlikely he sad, not many brake down in The Netherlands.

As I’m not the expert here, but I do would like to take the car on our holiday next month to Italy, I might ask for your € 0,02.

Just my € 0,02... I had a very intermittent issue with the engine stumbling and it was due to a faulty fuel rail pressure sensor. I believe several people on the S-type forum have had issues with these sensors as well, where they caused the engine to just stall. Since the code is pointing to that sensor, if you've verified wiring integrity (power, ground, and signal to the PCM), I would replace the sensor. It's about USD$100 from Jaguar.

This sensor is critical to the engine operation with the returnless fuel system.

Looks like a problem with the fuel pressure sensor but check wiring first.

An excellent explanation here:

Well, it's been a while. Due to holiday season

The sensor was not the problem. After replacing the error still occurred. Further investigation led to the fuel pumps. When lifting the rear seat it seems someone had been messing with the wiring of the 2 fuelpumps. Original cabling was changed, extra wires were added. Strange. It happened that the fuel was not leveled in both compartments so no fuel was being pumped to the engine. So my specialist brought everything back to original. (who's checking under the rear seat when buying a car?)
Still the problem was there. In the end he ended up with replacing and testing control units and eventually led to the fuse box in the trunk. All connectors below were showing massive corrosion. It seems the trunk had been exposed to a substantial amount of water.
After replacing the fusebox and the connectors everything was fine again. Yess!!
