Default Resolved: Inconsistent stall, then no start (P0193 & P0191)

I have not experienced engine related error codes for months but occasionally my STR's engine would stall. It was likely a coincidence but most times I would be running at 55-65 mph. I would simply place the car in neutral (rolling at speed), turn the key and it'd start up and run fine.

Two days ago I was driving and the same thing happened but the engine did not re-start. I rolled to a safe stopping position off the road. The engine actually started, ran rough for 5 seconds and stall again. I let the car sit for a couple minutes and then it started again and it ran fine. Still no error codes.?.?.?

Yesterday morning the engine would start briefly but never continued to run. After 8-10 consecutive starting attempts I began to smell gas. Before smelling the gas, I thought it was a failed fuel pump or possibly a clogged fuel filter. But I had already changed the filter twice in 70K miles. I then disconnected the mass air flow sensor and tried to start the engine. It made no difference. I then tested the fuel pressure with a mechanical gauge. The pressure was very high and very erratic as the engine tried to start and run. At times pegging the meter at 100 PSI.

From changing the heater hose under the SC, I remembered there was a sensor mounted on the fuel rail (driver's side). It was easy to get to so I disconnected it. I turned the key and the engine started and ran at a high idle for 20 seconds and then settled to a normal idle rpm. I stomped on it and the car ran great, then I got an error code. The code was P0193 (Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Ckt High). I removed the part cleaned the terminals and reinstalled it. The car ran fine for almost 3 minutes, stalled and then the code P0191 (Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Ckt Perf).

I called Jaguar and they had the part in stock for $127. The sensor actually had a Ford logo and Ford part number on it. I called Ford and they quoted $154; they said they match the $127 Jaguar price.

Installed the new fuel rail sensor and engine is running well again. I am not certain why my STR gave no codes originally. This happened when my cats were clogged too.

Part Numbers:
Jaguar JA-AJ8-7977
Ford 3R3E-9F972-AA (on part)
Ford 3R3Z-9F972-AA (on invoice and plastic bag)

Wow, unlucky, very rare, but you fixed it quick!

It can only flag codes if it can figure out what's wrong and that sensor sounds to have been screwy but plausible enough most of the time

These and new cars are so complicated in respect to wiring, modules, sensors, etc. Then you have to find them or they show up whilst performing something entirely unrelated....

Thank you for your kind words.

I likely would not have resolved this if it did not completely fail yesterday. I had the idea of testing the fuel pressure but the crazy fuel pressures didn't happen often.

This was/is actually a dangerous situation. If my wife would have been driving the car any of the times the engine stalled over the last few months, she would not have placed the car in neutral and re-started going highway speeds. She likely would have been stuck "steering" without "power steering" and coasted to a unsafe position on the highway.

They steer well at speed, it's a variable rack with less assist as you go faster. Still would've been unpleasant. I suppose there's always some fault that can be a bad one - rod through block at speed, or whatever.

A quick search would have saved you much time. I have fully documented this error code on my 2005 STR. Yes you can use a Ford part. I found it for about $50.

clubairth,
You did write a nice post but I didn't find yours. I looked through pages and pages of "stalling" related searches. If you read my post again, I received no error code(s) until I began messing with the part.

I am not sure why the sensor's price has gone up in price so much. At Ford the cost has gone up 300%+ from your price. I called two Ford dealerships, both were higher than at Jaguar dealerships.

clubairth1,
Please post or PM me your Ford dealer's phone number. They may be able to help me with great prices in the future.

Sure. They have treated me right on my wife's 2003 Lincoln LS coil warranty. So the free publicity won't hurt!

Of course they may have caught on to the price difference and jacked up the Ford part. But the Lincoln forums have guys replacing this part and no mention of a huge price increase?

Thumbs up

The info from this thread is going straight into my encyclopedia of '05 STR problems and solutions.

Guys,

I faced the same problem a few days ago. P0193 came up together with MIL. I cleared the ECU memory and 200 miles later it came back together with P0191.

I searched the forum and found this thread. Excellent description and completely useful together with the mentioned part numbers.

Thank you! All other Internet resources related to the Jag and the error codes were not really helpful.

I ordered the FRP sensor (OMG - what a journey...), replaced the faulty sensor and the problem is gone.

I love this community :-)
