Default Parking Brake broken

I own a 2006 XJ8L model Jaguar, and I am an idiot! the car had been sitting in zero weather for several days and i had an emergency. i just jumped into my car, started it , without looking at the dash, i just fastened my seat belt, put the car in reverse and stepped on the gas, the car hesitated for a second, and then there was a loud POP/sorta bang noise and it backed up. i put it into drive and when i looked at the dash, the message center said "parking brake cannot engage!" what could i have broken?? Thank you for any help you can offer Jackie

It should have disengaged when placing into Drive.

Possibility the cable has broken and caused damage to motor.

Try procedure below and see what happens

1. Reset the EPB module:
a. Switch off the ignition.
b. Disconnect the battery for 30 seconds. For additional information, refer to STYPE Workshop Manual Section 414-01. c. Reconnect the battery.
2. Start the engine.
3. Firmly apply and release the footbrake five times.
4. Confirm that the message "NOT CALIBRATED" or "APPLY FOOT AND PARK BRAKE" is displayed on the instrument cluster message centre. This indicates that the parking brake is in calibration mode.
5. Lightly press the footbrake pedal.
6. Apply the parking brake by using the EPB switch.
7. Release the parking brake.
8. Release the footbrake.
9. Confirm that the brake warning lamp is no longer illuminated on the instrument pack and that

Thank you JBzXJ40.. I asked my Mechanic to look at it, and there are NO broken cables and NO codes. I will try your suggestion ( just have to clean out the trunk to reach the battery ) and see what happens... if i am Lucky, that will fix it if NOT i order another actuator motor. Thank you again for your help and wonderful idea JBzXJ40

Just to let everyone know, i did manage to re calibrate the EPB, but during the 5 press hard on the brake pedal, i blew a brake line . and it went to the floor, but it still managed to fix the EPB Now the car is at my Mechanic, and i am hoping the leak is just a hose, and NOT something MORE serious .

I cannot thank everyone here enough for all your help and kindness when i ask a question . Thank you each and every one

Wow, you must have some serious leg muscles to press hard enough to rupture a brake line. Better during calibration than while driving.

I 2nd that, glad the brake failure happened while at home than on the road.

Hopefully its just a brake hose - stick with genuine. Sometimes aftermarket ones don't last long. If it is a hose, have the others checked, might be on their way out too.

Glad your EPB is working now.... no worries
