Default Removal of Window Scratches

Returned from a trip and had quite a few bugs on the windshield. Not realizing how abrasive a Scotch Bright pad is, I used it on the windshield. Now, in bright sunlight, I can see scratches.

Any suggestions for a way to remove them?

Thanks,

My brother swears Brasso works, but I'd want to test it on something other than my windshield first.

This kit will remove light or shallow scratches using a rotary buffer.

Diamondite Glass Repair System Kit for Machine Application

From what I have found is...... that if you run your finger nail over the scratch and feel it it's to deep to polish out. The small deep scratches are almost impossible to remove...on the other hand the light hazy rub marks are workable even if you can feel them. It depends on what kind of scratch your talking about. I have never tried the Diamondite Glass Repair System Kit but have heard good reviews.

Call your local auto glass replacement place and then call the best local auto detailer for their opinions.

Yes, thanks. From my experience, in the last analysis, this should be the 1st step.

Especially if you are fortunate to have as great a detailing facility as I have in my town. For 150 bucks, they will have a fellow make it as good as new.

However, I first had to try my hand at it before common sense set in. Bottom line: Cerium oxide is the substance that you'll need. This compound comes in several iterations, all of which will work.(Diamondite no longer makes their scratch removal kit; something about the EPA.). I used the raw compound which looks similar to a dark red clay; I mixed it with water & then a polishing liquid; both worked equally well. You have to keep it wet with a water spray bottle for best results.

Be prepared to be covered from head-to-toe and bumper-to-bumper with a thin coating of red cerium oxide. Further, while a regular auto polisher will eventually remove the scratches; if there are a lot of them, one will not live long enough to accomplish the task. Pros use a cylindrically shaped wool polishing pad which attaches to a drill. This allows more pressure to be applied on the scratch.

Unless you have only a few scratches, Moses is absolutely correct; go to the auto detailer! I have had my car hand washed once, I've washed it twice & I'm still finding traces of cerium oxide here and there!!

Thanks to all for your suggestions.

Steve

Summit racing makes polishing wheels for glass. In all more years in the business (OVER 40) I have NOT personally witnessed anyone taking scratches from glass. They can SOMETIMES BE lightened, but the harsh REALITY is that they are there to STAY. Sorry to be the bearer of the bad news. Paintxpert....PS be aware of lots claiming to be able to do this.
