Default Sooty deposits

Hello All,

I serviced my 2009 X358 2.7TDVI this weekend for the first time. I'd like to say it was an enjoyable experience, I think I'll enjoy it a bit more next time now I'm more familiar with things.
Who designed an air filer box like that
Anyway, while I was under the car I had a mooch around the various bits and pieces, one area that caught my eye was around the turbo area's, in particular the near side one.
There appeared to be a very light dusting of soot on some of the surrounding components, it wasn't excessive, just caught my eye. When I had a closer look with a torch and a mirror I just couldn't decide where it had come / was coming from. There appeared to be a sealing washer (I think) made from kind of a brass gauze material between the turbo and manifold, although the pipework was solid this ring seemed to be quite loose, on both sides of the car.
Is this and the light deposits normal??
I don't have any problems with exhaust / diesel smells inside the car if it makes any difference.
Thanks in advance,

G

Any turbocharged car, petrol or diesel, has a blow-off valve to handle excessive pressure. Is this 'soot' anywhere near this valve ?

Thanks

Don't think so ...
"The turbocharger does not have a wastegate control valve."

... Workshop manual (p1672 of the Powertrain manual).

Sounds like something to do with the Exhaust Gas [= soot !] Recirculation valve (not a wastegate (blow off valve) but for emissions control).

"Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valves
Location: there are two EGR valves fitted, one to each exhaust manifold. These are water cooled and
electronically controlled by the ECM."

That brass gauze material sounds like a flex joint. Though I'm not sure if there would be one between the turbo and the manifold. I was reading recently about flex joints on the diesels between the turbo and exhaust pipe failing.
