Howdy gents. I haven't been using my car in a few months due to steering fluid leak and a heavy binding in my rack from the last drive I had with it. It is leaking severely from both side dust covers.
Would the best bet to be buying a refurb / used rack; or is there a easy rack rebuild kit with fresh seals? I don't necessarily see any rebuild seal kits online; nor quite know how difficult a rebuild would be for DIY, including assessing lash between the rack & pinion gear.
I would go for a refub rack instead of a used one, at least all seals should have been replaced and you should get a warranty for it.
With a used rack, you never know what the real condition is.
I have looked into the Jaguar parts caalogue, and it only shows the complete rack, and unfortunately no single items like the catalogues from other car manufacturers do, so it is a bit more complicated to find parts. Very often, steering racks have a sign stating the manufacturer and type of steering rack, and that could help if want to look for parts.
Thanks for the input! Going to try shopping for a remanufactured unit. We are just getting thawed out from being frozen over, and I have to work on the driveway outside

I agree with Thomas-S. This is one area you don't want used. Just too much risk as posted above.
If you have a 2003 model car Rock Auto does have a rebuilt unit. It's a MAVAL 9322M rack.
Fits these cars.
Expensive but within the range of rebuilt R & P's. R & P Rebuilt

Fair point - no, the 1998-2003 range is the prior gen x300; I have a 2008 VDP in the x350 model. Unfortunately none available on Rock Auto. I'm looking at one of these off eBay.
Separately, I did post on the Jaguar Forums marketplace and received some PM's to email some individuals claiming to be selling the exact parts, then requesting a Zelle payment. I found this to be a scam and reported the accounts that PM'ed me. For example, below is the PM I received as well as a similar account from BMW R18 forum some years ago, using the same language and directing to the same email address: surryb96@gmail.com and for Zelle Terry LoremanTerryL13@icloud.com
The email exchange back & forth outside of Jaguar Forums gave red flags - instant replies (ai email scam reply?) and some non-standard English + a JavaScript

Before we get too deep into this we need the last 6 digits of your VIN. From JPART there is a few different part numbers depending on your VIN.
I may have the wrong model.
I have not checked any part numbers with Jaguar yet but what I usually see is after the cars get older the part numbers all collapse into one part number for a range of cars.
But let's get the VIN first and see what you have.
The red flag on this is it's $1299 plus a $200 core charge!
Also note the used one they list for $575.
This is another Marval rack and I am not to sure about Carid? Marvel 93248M. They list a lot of stuff but I have never ordered from them.
It says it fits a 2008 and at $424 + $200 core that's cheaper than Jagbits. 2008 XJ Rack
Looking up the part number Marvel 93248M. Does bring up several other suppliers and FCP Euro is a known parts seller. They only list 2004-2005 for the XJ but I am sure that 2008 is the same.
Again about the same price and core charge. FCP Euro Rack
As I posted above not a fan of used but this rack is a hard one to find and you may have no choice.
If it was my car I would go with the FCP Euro one AFTER we verify what you have!
