Vinyl roofs went out in the 70's. Common to Jaguar and Rolls Royce and other brands at that time, in the case of the Series 2 XJC I read the vinyl roof was because the body flexed enough to cause problems with the paints of the time.
Other than looks, the pictures suggest there's enough room for the River Avon to flow under the joins.
On the other hand, Jaguar now being Indian owned, maybe they were thinking to protect the roof if you park near a political rally and everyone jumps on top.

My wife is Indian. I'm gonna get killed for this...
Money doesn't buy good taste... it seems there's a stipe of "old people" that think simulated convertible tops are still a good thing. I recently saw a late model Nissan with a canvas roof
Whoever bought that Jag should have stayed at the Lincoln dealer and optioned a Signature Series Town Car with gold trim package. Would have paid less.
My grandfather was one of those... his last Cadillac (97 Eldorado) had every imaginable JC Whitney add-on, pin stripe, "chrome" cladding, simulated convertible top added by dealer at purchase. Awful. He said it was "custom." Ruined a good looking car.

I might have to ride by and take a look at this car do not care for the top but I sure would like to have the steering wheel . Hand sanitizer has done a number on the pleather covering parts of my steering wheel .
See it had 3 previous accidents as well. Not sure if they were driver caused... my guess is people were trying to put that car out of it's misery. Notice the grill, trunk trim and badge were plated (or sprayed) gold which mostly has came off. Can't imagine how it looked new with that mix of gold, chrome and canvas. However, can imagine two retired salesmen trying to one-up each other over drinks... "I once sold eight Cadillac's in a single day". That's nothing... I once sold a Jaguar XJ with a canvas roof, gold grill and chrome bumper trim on a Tuesday".
Can't say what happened here, but putting a vinyl roof or such on a car was once upon a time a common fix after a hailstorm. Still a perfectly good running and driving car, but the insurance would total it due to the cost of body work. Used car lots would pick them up cheap at insurance auctions, replace the hood and deck lid from salvage (because those can be unbolted), then install a padded vinyl or canvas top to hide the battered roof as it was cheaper than repairing the dents. If you could tolerate the style, it was a way to get a practically new car (and sometimes even brand new cars from a dealership) for a bargain price. After a major hailstorm in 1995, my employer at the time had white vinyl roofs added to about twenty five or thirty Dodge Spirit staff vehicles. They were embarrassing enough before the vinyl roofs tho.
Chrome strip over drivers front wheel, but not on the passengers side.
Are we hiding something there/
lol. I see that. Maybe they are hiding something. Even if they are not they should have just removed them or stuck some on the other side before offering it for sale.
