Default Strange Valet key

My '04 X350 was purchased from a friend who bought it new. When I bought it at 48K mi. it was in pristine shape. It still is (54K). However the other day, I accidently hit the valet button and, of course, neither the glove compartment nor the trunk (boot) would open. So, not being able to retrieve my handbook, I tried the Valet key to see if I could affect some kind of voodoo removal of the valet lockout situation. In the process I tried to start the car and, while I could turn it on, it would not start. I have since discovered how to remove the valet lockout, but am puzzled that the valet key will do all it is supposed to do except start the car.
Before I get a dealer involved in any of this, I thought I'd ask the collected wisdom if there is something I did or didn't do to cause this.
I called my friend up and asked him about it and he said he had never even tried to use the valet key from new. So, tis a puzzlement.
Any thoughts?

To reset everything, next time use the regular key to pop up to trunk, not through the remote, go use the keyhole next to license plate lights. This method always disables the valet mode for me. Lol

Maybe it's not properly programmed. I paid over $200 for my valet key!
