Tach not reading properly

Tach not reading properly
Hello All,
I just purchase a 2004 xj8. Runs great, but noticed tach not working properly. Instead of sitting on zero it has moved the eight. Disconnected battery and tach went back to zero.
Then tach went to four as starting point. Is this a battery issue or what?
