Question Test drove an 2004XJ today

Hi
I test drove a 2004 XJ with 47000miles today. It was nice looking skyblue but it had a noticable shift from 1st to 2nd when accelerating normally, not a major jerk but like it fell into 2nd. Is this normal? - I expected it would be very smooth.
When driving steady at 45-50mph it was like the car could not seattle down and very slightly would accellerate, to back off right after - maybe it was shifting gear. It did not seem to happen when the transmission was not in sports mode - is this normal?

Thank you in advance

Run away. Several of us 04 XJ owners have had similar issues. It seems to be an issue with early 04 models. Look for an 05 or later. This thread should answer your question.
