Things that go bump in the wheelwell
I had my recently-acquired 2006 XJ8 up on jacks to check for leaking coolant (that issue is resolved). Since then we have noticed that the front passenger side produces a bumping or popping sound when we drive over a rough spot in the road. What might be causing this? What should I check for?

Hi Mark,
It could be any of the suspension bushings, which are known to perish. If the suspension hung down by the weight of the wheels while you had the car on jacks, perhaps the upper control arm ball joint or lower shock bushing were stressed. The stabilizer bar links and bushings are another potential source of knocks.
There have also been reports of bolts coming loose on the suspension and steering rack.
Hopefully a thorough inspection will reveal the problem. Please keep us informed.
Cheers,
Don
