Either the spark plugs are not being fired at the correct time with respect to the pistons, or (more likely) the cams are not opening and closing the valves at the right time again with respect to the pistons.

There should be fault codes; have they told you what they are ? The ignition, (spark) timing on modern engines relies on a sensors to tell the ECU where the engine is in terms of the ignition cycle for each cylinder. Normally there is a crankshaft position sensor and a camshaft position sensor. As far as I remember, if the cam sensor fails whilst the engine is running the ECU relies on what it detected at engine start and can keep the engine running, but cannot start the engine. If the crank sensor fails the ECU will stop the engine.

The valve timing for the engine is unlikely to have shifted as the camshafts are driven by chain. However this is not unknown with engines that used a toothed belt for the camshaft drive. The Jaguar 3 litre V6 diesel engine has toothed belts, an invention of the Devil IMHO !

Unless there were some very loud mechanical "noises-off" when the car stalled, I suspect it is all down to an electronic fault somewhere as I said before.

P1260?????

Key might need to be configured (or RECONFIGURED?) to the car.

A replacement ECM or other important module will need to have the 'immobilizer-setup' performed?
