AFAIK you need metric spanners and sockets.
The changeover for Jaguar started at the XJ6/12 Series 3 from 1979, when imperial and metric nuts and bolts were used. The XK 6-cylinder engine, for instance, was always imperial. The AJ-6 engine that replace it was metric, I believe. I am not sure about the V12, because these were made up to 1992. It was probably Ford that enforced a full conversion to metric in the early 90s.
