Hello All:

I have a 2004 XJ8 Vanden Plas with 51,000 miles on it. Recently it doesn't want to go into 6th gear (Overdrive) when at highway speeds. If I drop the shifter over into 5th gear on the J-gate and then back over to the normal drive position on the right side of shifter it will shift up to overdrive every time. Also, if I punch the gas pedal to try and trick it into up shifting it will down shift as it should to 4th and then 3rd but won't up shift. This occurs when the car is in normal (not sport) mode. Any ideas/thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Check the shifter cable bracket under the car to see if it is coming loose. After that, pull the electronics plug and clean it. Then check fluid level and finally plug it into the computer.
