Default Trunk not Staying Open

Hi Everyone,

The trunk on my Xj8 is not staying up in the open position. When I open the trunk and lift it up, it doesn't stay at the top, but falls back down into the closed position. Is there a way to adjust the Actuators (not sure if that is the correct term for them) or would they need to be replaced in order to keep the trunk open?

Thanks for all of your help,

Eric

One or both of the gas struts has failed, so you need to buy new ones.

Try eBay and see if you can find a Jaguar original, but there are aftermarket suppliers of non-original ones like I now have on mine. They don't look so good but do the job and cost me very little, (around £14 each, I think). This is the UK supplier: -

Jaguar Boot Struts | Tailgate Struts | Bonnet Gas Struts

Here's an eBay listing for genuine struts: -

Jaguar XJ6 Saloon 2003- Boot Lifter Gas Struts | eBay

I don't know who in the US does them. I used google UK site to search these out, so I assume you will find something on google.com

Thanks - it looks like something I could probably change out myself too. I'll take a look around and see what I can find.

Fraser,

Do you know what size the ones you bought are? I'm looking over here at Autozone in the US, but it looks like they come in many different sizes. I think they are 16" extended by 10" compressed? Or 17" extended by 10" compressed. I already tried the 17.2" by 11" compressed.

Thanks for your help,

Eric

Hi Eric

No, I don't know the size because I just picked the ones for my X350 off a list of car models. Take one off and measure it; it will have sufficient gas to keep extended, but not enough to take the weight of the trunk lid. If one shows oil seapage, take the other off as the bad one may have no gas at all.
