Update - Spring Suspension Conversion
Four days ago I had an independent tire retailer install the Arnott Air Suspension Conversion on my 2004 XJ8.
It's not totally fair to compare the spring suspension to the the air ride, since it wasn't performing optimally, but here are my observations:
I can tell a difference. Not necessarily better or worse - just different. The cat has lost some of the "magic" of the air ride. However, it now feels "younger" somehow - more connected to the road. More like a (can I say it?) BMW. I feel the road irregularities through the steering wheel and seat, whereas before I kind of felt "above it all".
Cornering and large dips in the road now feel more controlled.
I don't know if it is my imagination, but the steering effort now feels more linear. It seemed that there was less steering effort at slow speeds before.
After I got the car back from the shop, I disconnected the battery for a couple of hours and disconnected the ASM from behind the rear seat (not a fun project).
See attached picture. The car now sits somewhat higher. I do miss that low "crouched cat" look pre-conversion, but I certainly do not miss the fault messages and worry of impending suspension meltdown.
Overall, I am pleased with the conversion. I am glad Arnott has had a few years experience under their belt building these conversions for this model. I believe it to be safe and reliable.

I'm considering to go with the Arnott conversion kit and your post has been very helpful. I do have a few questions though based on your experience:
1. About how much did the independent tire retailer charge you to install the suspension?
2. Does the suspension feel more on the "comfort" or "sporty" side?
3. Do any suspension warning lights come on when driving in Sport mode? I know that Sport mode makes the air suspension stiffer so I'm curious how it acts in Sport mode for the conversion.
4. How does the car feel at high speeds (65-80 mph)?

Around $485 including front end alignment.
2. Does the suspension feel more on the "comfort" or "sporty" side?
More on the "sporty" side, mainly because of increased road feedback, and firmer ride over large bumps.
3. Do any suspension warning lights come on when driving in Sport mode? I know that Sport mode makes the air suspension stiffer so I'm curious how it acts in Sport mode for the conversion.
No warning lights at all. I was told the Sport mode now only affects the transmission shift points.
4. How does the car feel at high speeds (65-80 mph)?
I've been up to about 65 post-conversion. Very smooth with no change in stability that I can tell.
I bought the kit from CarID on Ebay. They will work with you on price.
