on my 2004 XJ8, car starts using original cluster. used cluster causes the vehicle not to start. I can't find the correct procedure in the SDD to code the cluster to the vehicle.
I found a menu to configure existing module or new module, is this the correct route to code the new used cluster? Any tips?
I went through something similar when my OE cluster died. I sent both the old and new to a company in Minnesota who copied the coding/odometer from the original chip and put it on the new one.
I think you should be able to do what you want with the original in the car and then the new one--the Jag dealer seemed to think they could do that, but I'm sorry I don't know the details of where in SDD.
It can be done through SDD, but you will need to phone a dealer and beg them to generate a security code for you to enable the recoding option. A normal programming subscription does not give you the required access.
A quick search online reveals that there are companies out there that have cracked the security code generation and will send you a code for a fee, should you wish to try that route.
I've not replaced the cluster on an X350 myself, but I have reflashed the existing cluster on an X350. I've thought about it some more since my last post and you should be able to use a normal SDD module programming subscription to code the replacement with your key fobs and steering column in order to use the car again (I did not require coded access for that) unless it detects it is from a different vehicle and requires a security code to unlock the option. Try it and see.
I would expect that picking any symptom for the instrument cluster not working would give access to new/existing programming candidates. If not try looking under extras with a suitable symptom selected. Failing that you should be able to use the SoftwareDownload.htm technique to access the full module programming options (use with care! - search the interwebs for "SDD SoftwareDownload.htm" to find out how to use it).
Regarding changing the odometer to the correct vehicle value, on the X350 and other Jaguar models of that age they removed the ability to correct the odometer value. It is only possible through SDD for older and then again for some more recent models. You would need to use a third party to copy the EEPROM chip data from one to the other (I would personally retain the old cluster as proof for future sales). Or you could just make a note of both odo readings at the time of the swap and the correction offset in the front of the service booklet, and ensure that any garage doing work on it is aware they need to apply the offset.
Thanks for the quick reply, I started to reprogram the instrument pack and got to the point where it wanted to mess with the key programing at which point I stopped.
At this point I'm going to try to take apart the used cluster in hopes I can remove the specific part I want to replace in the correct cluster so I can bypass the coding issues.
this may only be for 04 05 XJ's.
if so disregard this
1, you need two key fobs for the procedure ,
2, you need to carry on . and
3, you need to have the the 9 digit no# from the steering column ,
.or if your lucky you may still have the duplicate sticker in the right side of your boot/trunk .
i was not lucky . you have to un bolt and drop the column to retrieve it .
your milage will be incorrect , it will read what ever the donor car had .
it looks like this , just drop the two zero's off the no#s between the bar graphs .
