Vibration at Speed
Jaguar XJ 2.7TDvi 2007 X350.
Right.... any thoughts on this dilemma I am having!
I have had a vibration from the rear of my car pretty much since I first bought it (approx. 6 months ago) - It feels like a buckled brake disc but the vibration is there all the time which is not common with a warped disc as the buckle in the disc just knocks the brake pad out of the way on the next revolution when the brake is not applied.
There was a noise under braking from speed that also sounded like a warped disc.
I had the car into a friends garage a couple of weeks ago to investigate - first port of call was to get all 4 wheels balanced which they did... this helped but did not cure it completely.
The issue is that the vibration is quite 'fine' in as much as it is only really present at 80+ and it is more like a buzz really.
You hear it really more the feel it and you can see the rear view mirror 'buzzing' as you drive along.
On a second visit to the garage the guys there had a good look around the rear of the car and could not see anything obviously at fault - suspension component / worn bush etc. so as a process of elimination they rotated the rear wheels to the front to see if the vibration moved to the front of the vehicle.
It seems to now have moved to the front after the wheels have been moved although it also seems to be less pronounced - on the ay to work tonight for example at 75 / 80 mph on the motorway there was no real 'buzz' in the rear view mirror but the vibration could be felt through the brake pedal and steering wheel..... same sort of thing as with the rear, more of a buzz than a serious bang.
I have been told that the issue could be an imperfection in a tyre or wheel but if this was the case surely the wheel balance would have showed this up?
I have also seen people comment on similar issues and suggest force balancing the wheels?
I have considered getting 2 new tyres on the front as the tyres are nearly down to the tread marker anyway but I don't want to o down this route until know that there is not an underlying issue elsewhere?
Has anyone else ha a similar issue as it is driving me potty now!!!
Thanks......

When the tires were balanced, did any of the wheels require a lot of weight compared to the others? If so, I would recommend having them balanced again, but OEM matched this time. It's a process of matching the low and high sports of the tires to wheel, giving a better wheel balance and lowering the amount of weight required as well.

I have 20 inch Sepangs on my XJR and had vibration at 65 plus, expecially when the tires were cold. I had the tires balanced and they were able to observe that the wheels were bent. I had 3 of the 4 wheels straightened, which resolved the problem.
You did not mention any issue braking after the wheel balance. Bushes do tend to be problems for these vehicles, so you may want to look hard to see if there are any damaged bushes.
