I’m planning on driving my 06 XJ8 from SF to LA. The car has 88K miles on it. Should I have the water pump replaced before the trip? Thank you in advance.

 

Does the pump itself or the gasket show signs of any leakage?

If yes, replace it (there is a newer type of water pump with a different gasket available).

If not, I would say that you can keep it, but because of the age, you can never be 100% certain.

What is the trip? Roughly 400 miles one way?

Yes the trip will be about 400 miles one way. I currently don't have any leaks but the car is 20 years old. Thank you again for your advice, I absolutely LOVE the car and want to take it on a road trip with the family. Really get it out on the open road.

It wouldn't have to be a visible leak, but if the weep hole shows crustiness, then replace. You'll need some patience, lights, and mirrors to check that with the hoses and fan in place.

 

Try a 40 mile trip at least a week before.
mine xj8 had 230k miles snd drove it at least once a weak. Have a quart or oat g12+ silica free coolant with you. Or destilled water
