Default Whine on-Whine off

All this past winter we heard a whine that sounded like it was coming from the transmission. When we'd stop so would the whine. When we stopped and shifted to neutral, the whine would die down.

In the quiet of our garage I heard the whine after start-up one cold morning. I turned off the climate clontrol system (A/C) and whine off. AC on, whine on.
Recently I turned the AC on-off-on-off and the whine went away...until today.

What am I dealing with folks? Compressor? Low refrigerant? FWIW, I do not remember having the AC serviced or doing it myself. But during and after (16) years of ownership I must write service dates in a log which I often fail to do. Heck, I had the serpentine belt change twice. But I keep most all receipts well which led me to the serpentine belt debacle.

Thanks in advance for advice and guidance.

Be safe. Stay safe. Cope as best you can with this C-19. Good luck to all.

I had this failrr faint whining noise on both my X350s, and an aircon regas cured it. The regas includes putting in compressor lubricant too. It almost like a warning to get your aircon serviced !

I used A/C Pro to re-gas and re-oil the AC in my wife's Dodge Grand Caravan some years ago. Was very pleased with the results. Do our X350s require anything special other than an off the shelf product? Thanks.

The refrigerant in the "off the shelf" product needs to be the same type as originally fitted. This would have been R134a. Use of this in new vehicles is now being phased out, but will still be available for older vehicles. Over time, the old vehicles get scrapped and become beer or bean cans so R134a will eventually cease to be used. The lubricants just have to work with the refrigerant, and I don't think there are any particular issues with these.

[QUOTE I must write service dates in a log which I often fail to do..[/QUOTE]

I keep a book in the garage and log everything that I do on the cars or after a while I haven't got a clue what I've done. Running 3 cars and doing all my own maintenance I sometimes struggle to remember what I've done to which car and the older you get, the worse it gets.

Best Wishes and Stay Safe.

P.S My X350 AC whines a bit especially if it needs a re-gas
