Default X350 bonnet catch design

I have had various problems opening the hood bonnet right from Day1!! Have read all of the solutions for the various models. I am now in a situation where I have a new cable fitted and greased accordingly. I have a brand new interior handle. Unfortunately I cannot get the small ball on end of cable to stay in position in its hole. It just flops out. (I have been using pipe grips to gently increase the pressure until hood opens). Now that solution is not working! Anyone any thoughts about securing the cable to the plastic interior handle please, (before I have to take the grill off to get under hood!!!) (2003 X350 Super V8).

Sounds like the inner cable is too long.

You may be able to fit a distance piece on the cable at the latch end.

eg a small length of metal tube with a split in it.

Thanks Meirlon1. That's got me thinking. It will be quite a short tube if I can hold it in place. Have horrible feeling that it won't be a permanent fix. At least I feel confident that the cable will not break being new. Thanks. I will report back.
