xj8 front suspension clunking...or not???
A month ago I had two new Arnott air shocks installed on the front end of my car. When I picked it up from the Indy mechanic, he said that my front sway bar bushings were worn and it would cause a clunking noise when I drive on rough roads. I do hear the clunking when on rough pavement.
I do not recall that noise before the shocks were replaced. Could they cause it to begin??
I took the car to my gas station mechanic who has maintained my other cars for an oil change. I asked him to take a look at the front steering and sway bar. He removed the bottom cover and examined them with his flashlight, and did some grabbing and shaking. Said he didn't see a problem.
We took the car for a test drive without the bottom cover. We ran over quite a bit of rough pavement. No clunking!!
He replaced the cover and I headed for home. The clunking was back!
I am puzzled. Any thoughts or similar experiences?
Thanks

I have a noise in my front that sounds like the upper shock bushing is bad. I have had it apart a number of times and have checked ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings nothing loose I have had it with this noise!
I thought my upper A- arms were good because I couldn't feel any movement when I replaced the front shocks. I took them off and one of the bushings was torn and was very loose. Bought new A-arms on Ebay and the clunking is gone.
I had the same issue with the bottom panel. I found that there is a support to the radiator air deflector and two plastic supports protrude and press on the bottom panel.
These should have a rubber end attached, but it had come off. I stuck some Velcro on this and it was much better.
