Default Steering Wheel Craziness

I used to keep my steering wheel set in the auto position for ease in getting in/out of the cat, until about 6 months ago when it began to shudder really bad trying to go in or out. I thought it was likely a broken or slipped plastic gear on the reach motor, so adjusted it manually to where it needed to be and turned off the auto feature.

Fast forward to today when I put the key in to come home. It moved in about an inch and down about half that. With the auto feature off. No issue, just drove home.

Once home I tried to manually adjust it, but no joy. It's like the switch is dead. However, it now works flawlessly in auto mode! It even goes in and out all the way without a problem. It's never been able to do that before.

For now, I'm just going to leave it alone. If some other gremlin pops up, then I'll take a look. Has to be some electrical glitch (what a shock).

Gotta love these cars.

Thanks Jandreu, that's been on my to do list since I saw it posted. Just haven't gotten around to it. I have less of an excuse now.

As an update my driver side seat switches are not working either. Checking the fuse chart, it turns out the manual steering wheel movement switch and seat switches are on the same fuse. But I just checked that and it is OK. Traded it out with another one just in case, but no luck.

Sounds like I have a weekend project coming up.

Just an update on a few things I learned.

It was a fuse, but the chart in my owners manual does not match my fuse box. Had to pull each fuse one at a time to find the right one. Want to guess which one it was? And why is it always the last one you try?

My manual is for North America and for my MY of 2001. It is not off one or two positions, but they seem to be scrambled in order. WTF?

The bad news is that I have a short somewhere. It blows that fuse pretty quick. I was able to set the steering wheel in a drivable position, so I will wait for it to cool off before troubleshooting.

What I read on the forum tells me seat wiring is likely, but I was not prepared to pull the seat out today.
