Steering wheel memory 1999 XK8
[>:]When I insert my key in the ignition 20% of the time it will remember my personal settings. But most of the time I have to press button 1 or 2 repetedly to get the wheel to drop down to where I had it when I last drove. [:'(]It is not life threatining but very anoying. Any info would be great.
Thanks

Well we've got 3 yrs covered. My 98 is doing the same thing. Started when temps dropped Will extend but won't drop to proper position. Trying to drop it manually I get fractions of an inch at each push of button until almost bottom of travel the moves normally to position.

RE: Steering wheel memory 1999 XK8
Just bought a 2001 XKR and drove it for the 3rd time last night and had the same problem with the steering wheel memory described above but next time I started it, no problem. Am used to Lexus SC 430 reliability (but boring) but always heard of electrical problems with Jaguar products....at least the Lexus SC 430 will never be a classic like the XKs.....tradeoffs I suppose. If anyone knows a resolution to this issue, please let me know. Also, driver's headrest not raising but I hear clicking noise in seat. Thanks.

Another one of Jaguar's several common problems. The steering wheel position potentiometers and lubrication of the moving parts are the problem. I suspect that the lube problem agravates the burning of a resistance spot on the pots. Many discussions on the subject with the only solution to replace the motor/potentiometers.

According to my owner's manual the hesitation on steering wheel movement is a safety factor when the gear lever is out of the park position. It should not move continuously while the car is in motion. Same for the memory seat feature; it will not function unless the shifter is in the park position. Albeit, mine does not work half the time in park. I have the memory buttons 1 & 2 set for the same position. When button 1 does not work, I press button 2, then button 1 again and it might work. Lincoln (Ford) products use the same features. I wonder if they are having the same issues. At least the steering wheel always raises up when the key is removed from the ignition.

Thats the problem... worn/noisy pot.... you can try switch cleaner... as you would for any pot.
Another quick thing you can try, is use the ignition key to trigger the switch (at insert time) and take it in/out/in/out several times. If this helps... it proves the worn pot track as what you have just done is clean the track... by no means a solution, but will prove the issue...

When I first addressed the problem I set Memory 1 and 2 on either side of the stop spot. Then alternated 1/2/1/2/etc about a hundred times. That helped with the percent fail but did not resolve the issue.
It's just another thing to love about these cars.

Its just a shame that stb pots are not used... it would be a very cheap repair if they did!
I wonder if something could be fabricated as I am sur ethe Jag part will be $$$$ and probablyintegrated with the motor(s)...
