Default Year to Year changes

greetings. i understand that one change from 2005 to 2006 was deletion of the side molding and something about a clear turn signal. as well as some remapping of the transmission. then, in 2008 there was a major cosmetic change such as a different front bumper cover and trim on the trunk lid. so question is, does the front bumper cover of an 08-09 fit into an 04? i am partial to the more aggressive from air dam treatment of the 2008-2009.
also, if there was remapping of the transmission, can the 2004 be "upgraded" to that of latter years? i'm assuming it's essentially the same transmission, just different computer programming. what else was changed prior to the 2008 "major " change?
thank you in advance, william

The rear bumper cover was also changed, like the front, it is taller and helps wrap around the exhaust tips. Also the side rocker panels & lower parts of the doors were changed to make a seamless design round the entire car. I believe the fenders are different too. If the designers had not made so many cosmetic changes to the entire body, it would be simple to replace front and rear bumpers but alas that is not the case.

edit: What does fit, however is the 2009 grille and can be found easily on eBay

That is where I got mine. It came factory painted and with the emblem for about $200

Also, take a look at this:

jahummer, i took a peek at the link you sent me from the fellow in the uk doing the ody conversion! wow!but way more than i.m able or willing to do, and you still gotta find the parts or donor vehicle, get it painted etc. i think i'm better off doing some minor things and calling it a day until i can upgrade to a 2008-2009 xj!
thanks for the tips though.
