Today I had a problem with my jaguar x300 3.2. This has happened 4-5 times over the past two months.

The problem is that when I accelerate on the freeway at about 100 km / h, suddenly the rpm drops to 0 and the accelerator does not react, it does not accelerate, but the engine does not shut down.

It's a big security problem because when this happens, I have to get off the shoulder and turn the engine off and on again. When I start the engine again, the car works perfectly.

On other occasions, it has happened to me that the accelerator does not respond but only for 2-3 seconds, the engine light comes on, but after 2-3 seconds, it continues to operate normally.

All 6 ignition coils and spark plugs have been changed and the problem persists.

Anyone know what can it be?

 

Codes ? Auto parts store will read for free in my area .

I agree that the TPS is suspect. A dead spot, methinks.

My guess would be fuel starvation. Could be OK under light load but under stress of heavy acceleration not enough fuel.

If fuel filter has not been replaced recently try that first.

If fuel pump is still original I would replace it (even if it doesn't fix the problem it is prudent preventative maintenance on a car of this age). Lots of info on the forum on how to do that.

 

If you replace the TPS if it comes to that one thing to consider based on your location and the possibility of requiring the ECU reorientated or tuned to the new TPS . I would get a reading of the 0 % throttle position signal back to the ECU . Might have to clean the throttle body and adjust the throttle linkage to ensure the butterfly is there . Solid green/small stripe yellow wire that runs over the fuel rail in the tray . That way you can match the signals and possibly get away without the ECU orientation . The Jaguar document state that the idle or 0 % reading with key to the on position not run is 0.60 + or - 0.02 volts . Yours may or maynot be out of this range as there is no twisting adjustment to the mounting holes . Mine was at 0.63 volts . I drilled the plastic mounting holes up a size to be able to twist it and get it to 0.601 volts . I will probably need a ECU orientation and have the option to be able to do so , you may not . So at least get the reading of your original as installed and record it and put it on that point . Any questions just ask but record that original point .

To test the variable resistor TPS without removing it and engine off you can put a meter on the red connector of the ECU and sweep the wiper slowly with the gas petal and look for the bad spot as a spike in resistance ( bad ) as that is how you are reading it now . Since yours appears to be intermittent as you describe the symptoms you may not see it so keep trying . Disconnect the battery first . Small paperclip works .
