Default 1995 xj6 growling from underneath.

Difficult one for anyone to advise on a noise, but i have a annoying growling noise coming from somewhere.Originally i was convinced it was exhaust related after changing one holed back box and the cat which had a huge crack in it.
The noise is still there,it comes on at about 2000rpm under load and goes at higher speeds, cant get it to make the same noise when standing idleing.
I have removed heat shield as this was loose and flapping freely.
It doesnt sound mechanical but cant be sure.
Has anyone come across the same problem.

Cheers for any advice mark

Welcome to the forum Mark,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help section to X300 section. Members here with the same model you have should able to offer advice on possible sources of the growling.

Unfortunately, "growling" can cover a lot of territory. In my case, the growling was a front wheel bearing. So my first question would be: Are you sure it's coming from the drive train? Or is it possibly from one of the other rotating components, becoming evident only when in motion?

It could be your center driveshaft mount bearings or rubber inserts. Lift up, and check the driveshaft for side to side movement. Not an uncommon issue. Sounds like a growl at around 45 mph.

Just to put this one to bed,it was a rear wheel bearing. There was no movement in it when the car was jacked up.left it on axle stands and drove it with wheels off the floor.BINGO!!
Cheers all for your help

Can it be that bad wheel bearing making noise may be the only indication of this type of problem. Sort of the same thing with my front wheel bearing! It went from minor hum to a roaring growl on the same day (around 30 miles total). The ride was still smooth and there was no wobble, even when jacked off the ground. The problem wasn't confirmed until the bearing was actually removed.

Um...it is a Jaguar. Jaguars growl. LOL. Seriously, glad you were able to find the problem. Good to know that when my car starts making sounds like a real Jaguar, it is time to check the wheel bearings.

Not quite ready to put to bed.
Changed the bearings, worse than ever!.when i bought the car the drive shaft on that side was loose.I think it has damaged the hub, and the carrier for the rear bearing is turning with the bearing.
So i need the hub assembly if anyone has a spare .
