Exclamation 1995 XJ6 - Will only start when gas is applied for several seconds.

Hey, this is my first time using this forum so I apologize if I forget anything in my post. I'm having a problem starting my 1995 XJ6 Vanden Plas, started at the turn of the key prior to today and now requires excessive pumping and holding throttle halfway to start. Once the car is started it runs fine, any ideas?

I just recently bought the car, it always started and ran perfect. It has 177,500 KM/110,000 Miles

Thank you in advance for any help!!

I'd adjust the carburetor first. Sounds like accelerator pump issues!! NAH! Just kidding.

Sounds to me like a fuel pump. Get that checked.
The fuel pumps have a one way check valve installed in them in order to hold fuel pressure on the fuel rail when the engine is off. If this check valve inside the pump fails, the system loses pressure immediately.....well not always immediately, but you get the point. The pump will need replacement. Oh, and this is just a guess, but I'd bet it's a good guess and a good place to start. To check the fuel pump you will need to have the fuel pressure checked. It should be around 45 psi at idle, and should not bleed off when the engine is shut off. It will bleed down eventually, but shouldn't do it right away...and I'm talking hours.

poboyblues, thanks for the response. The previous tries to starting it yesterday, once started there would be no "check engine" light on. Today however, there is now an orange "check engine" light. I'm going to take it to a local mechanic and get a diagnose and try and figure out what's wrong with it.

I've owned my 1985 V12 for over a year and haven't had a single problem! I've owned this 1995 for 3 days and it won't start lol!
