1997 xjr does not start ....
Hi all ,
First of all , sorry for my bad english, but i'm french , my english is sort of ..... Basic!! ;-)
after several years without any problems , several years reading posts here ,
Seems that hard times are coming ,
Last month , had a big problem , the engine has quit !
I was on neutral, had a rev at about 4500 rpm , and the engine has " naturally" stopped when rev down ..... And never start again .
I have change the ckps sensor , but still not start
It smells fuel, and we have spark .
If i insist on the starter , we have sort of misfire / backfire but absolutely no start .
Have you any idea ?
We maybe think about a problem of ckps target ?
Could it be a timing offset ?
We have checked the camshaft position sensor with the camshafts position , and looks like there is no offset between them ..... ( in regard of this post where we clearly see the offset :
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-chain-156571/
Have you any idea ?
What is the process to check the timing cranckshaft /camshaft ?
Is a target offset possible ??
Is there a way to check the target position of the ckps ?
Is there a repair manual available ?
As you probably know i live in new caledonia , lost island in south pacific , and jaguar service is simply inexistant !...... Bad luck
Thanks for your help !

hi all ,
first thanks to rj for helping me.
finally found the problem , after a few research , we found that there is no mechanical problems inside the engine , chains were tight , camshaft on the right position ......
so decided to go a bit deeper and checked the harmonic balancer...and finally found that the woodruff key was broken.......so timing was completely off......
; have done this morning a bit shopping , the woodruff key of course , but also all new belts (pulley already changed 2 years ago ) all necessary for classical service , front oil seal crankshaft (small leak) , all camshaft cover seals.......
thanks !

Thanks for following up. Good luck in getting it all sorted. By "(pulley already changed 2 years ago )" do you mean an idler? Or did you renew the crank damper 2 yrs ago? If you meant the idler, then as long as you are down for a bit, you may want to send that crank damper off for a rebuild.
