Default 96 XJ6 X300 locking problems

Well, the 96 must have gotten wind we were looking at a 2004 and decided to get my attention. Suddenly, the other day, the fob stopped working and the central locking stopped as well. Now you must open the drivers door and trunk with the key. Also, no security chirp when you do lock it up. The trunk lights do work and I now notice there is a red light on the door lock button next to the non-functional clock that is always on. I can't say that I have ever noticed it being on before. Anybody seen this set of circumstances before? In all the searches I have run it seems the trunk light should also fail. I've checked fuse #1, 15A in the right rear box and #8, 15A in the trunk and they are all OK. From what I can find in the wiring those are the fuses that control this stuff. I checked the wiring on the right trunk hinge and it seems OK and the connection to the security control box by the fuel filler looks like it is tight. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any input!

More wire wiggling this morning with no luck. The small red light is the switch is troubling me, other X300 guys out there, is your light on all the time? I can't say that I remember it ever being on in the past. I see in the owners manual that it should flash if you've bypassed part of the security system, but nothing about it being on full time. Unfortunately the car didn't come with the security system manual. That will be my next Google search...

OK a bit more info to add; I pulled every fuse in the 5 fuse boxes and checked each one, all OK. Unplugged the push switch on the trunk lid, no change. Apparently all of the black relays with a purple strip in the left rear fuse box are the same, switched them around, including the one in the trunk as well with no luck. Removed the security module, disconnected all 4 of the plugs and the light in the switch went out. Plugged them back in, the first, largest plug caused the horn for the security system to make a scratchy noise, plugged the rest back in and I'm right where I started. Downloaded a copy of the security handbook and it does not mention the light in the switch staying on. Time for a new/another security module?

Any info appreciated!

I think you're probably right that the Security module is dead. The red light should not be on in any state. I have the Security System technical manual that contains some more in depth tests for the module/system if you want to do some more digging. PM me your email address if you want it.

Isn't that red light the one that blinks when the security is locked, or "armed"?

Welcome to the forums Richard,

This is a six year old thread and therefore a post here is not the best way to request documents.

I'll look and see if I still have that file on my old computer and if I do will let you know. In the end a security module from a junker fixed all my troubles but I do recall having to cut the bracket to get it on and off without disconnecting something back there. I think it was something involving the fuel filler and a quick snip with some metal shears took care of it. Still works fine and was a cheap item at the U Pull It.
