'97 Won't do 02 orientation, go into closed loop or clear evap/cat monitors
I am still chasing down an evap & cat monitor issue in order to pass smog. Meanwhile the car runs very clean at 4PPM Hydrocarbon which is actually cleaner than the air here in San Diego which is 6PPM. With that said, I can't get the car to do three things:
1) Go into closed loop
2) Complete an oxygen senor orientation
3) Properly set the TPS at idle.
I have had the car at my local Jaguar guy and he has done the throttle pot reset and 02 orientation many times. The throttle pot adaptation gives me varying results. Right now it is idling well but missing like crazy, stalling, etc. especially at start up.
In my quest to fix this I have replaced the following with OEM or equal:
- Catalytic converters (primaries next to manifold)
- Lucas injectors
- Denso coil packs
- Bosch Fuel Pressure Regulator
- Bosch Fuel Pump
- MAF reman by Cardone
- NTK 02 sensors, I have more than enough if I have a bad one
- vacuum hoses
- EVAP valves 1) front behind driver headlight, 2) rear near gas tank
- EGR valve on throttle body, EGR valve under manifold connected to air pump
Throttle body is very clean and free of debris.
The only things I can think of are...
1) Throttle plate closing to proper gap (measure with feeler gauge)
2) Bad TPS?
3) Bad ECM (just ordered original Part# ECU and expect arrival Tuesday)
At this point, I have done everything I know of and have enough money into this car that I can never sell it!.
Please help.

What scantool are they using to try and adapt the TB and orientate the 02 sensors? We have Autologic and have no problems doing either of those. I know the 02 orientation has to be with a warmed up engine.

Bob, the R493 recall was done and the car used to pass this test (o2 orientation). It was administered with proper IDS/Jag/LR software at my Jaguar mechanic. The ECM actually looked brand new inside, no corrosion. I have a new one (exact part# on order as a backup) just in case as in two separate times I arched the battery to the body and maybe that caused an issue.
My XJR needed a secondhand replacement ECU to resolve similar issues - it was always in open loop.
I have Andy's reprogrammed EPROMs which were carefully swapped into the replacement ECU . It is good now.
And there was nothing obviously wrong with the original ECU. It just wasn't working properly.

You might be able to swap the original PROMs to the replacement ECM and avoid TPS and O2 orientation???
I don't know but I would start there first.
You will likely need to do the programming if you just replace the ECM 'as is'.
Every time I have swapped an ECM I have needed to reconfigure it (TPS and O2 orientation) with WDS. I have not tried the PROM swap.

I got the issue figured out after two years. I have a bad ECM, received the new (to me) replacement last night. Set TPS to .6V, unplugged battery negative, installed ECM. Reinstalled battery and.......PURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. Car runs amazing. I ran it to my Jaguar guy and for the usual $20, he reset the throttle pot. It feels so good to have the car back!
