97 XJ6 engine squeal on cold weather startup
Hello,
I have a 97 XJ6. I change the oil religiously every 5,000 miles with Mobile 1 0W-40. My engine emitts a squeal upon startup in cold weather, usually below 32 degrees. I have checked the belts, and they are in good condition and tight.
I have noticed what appears to be an oil leak around the upper timing chain tensioner. Could this tensioner be the source of the squeal? The squealing goes away as soon as the car warms up. I have driven it while squealing and it doesnt seem to affect anything. The only thing I have noticed is that the headlights will dim a little while at a stop light.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for the fast reply. The sound is definately a squeal. My first thought when I heard it was a loose belt, which I have already checked. I do hear somewhat of a grinding noise, every now and again, when I start the engine. It is very intermittent, and generally goes away.
Is there a way to check the crankshaft damper? I dont even know where to begin with that one.

try looking at the alt belt and or bearings, pop the bonnet when cold and start it, give them a squirt, if it goes away theres your problem.
especially with a dip in the headlamps when you come to idle at lights etc, its a definate drop in charge, see if you keep your eye on the volt meter when comming to a stop, even the slightest movement in the needle.

20/50 in an AJ16 ? Yikes ! I use 5/30.

Got to remember, Brutal and I are down in Houston. It just doesn't get that cold. We use the 20-50 in older cars.
To check the crankshaft pulley, mark the inner and outer metal rings in a straight line with a paint pen. If the line separates, then the rubber in the crankshaft may be ripping.

I've just had EXACTLY the same symptons/problems...I know how difficult it is to try and hear where the squeel is coming from (not least because it deafens you if you stick your head under the bonnet!!).........Turned out to be the water pump (obviously changed belts at same time). Not cheap, but at least it sorted the squel for me!!

I used to use 20W50 in my 3.6 Jaguar , I'm puzzled that I thought we had to use newer oil specs like 5W30 or so in '92 and on Jaguars .
I am also hearing squeals in my 1993 XJ40 4.0 liter engine . It never goes away as long as the engine runs which is slightly concerning me

eeeek. bump.
my new (to me, anyways) cat is doing this as well. starts up great, then about 2 mins. into warmup it will squeal pretty bad for about 30 sec then settle back down. sometimes it continues while accelerating from a stop but goes away soon as you hit 5mph or more... but the sound totally disappears when warm.. .
any consensus ? hopefully just a belt that needs tuning ? it's in the shop now, but jeez. you just don't expect a sound so awful to come from such a beautiful thing...

try this
Even though I live in az my xj6 started to do the same thing. The remedy was to fire up the car and take a green scotch brite pad tot he inside of the belts while the car was running. Now first and foremost if you are not possesing some sort of auto repair skills just take it to your local independant jag shop. If your are competetant and willing to get your hands dirty this will do the trick.

watch your fingers
I had the exact same issue with my vehicle, and this is what solved it. Before I go into details my car has had the balancer replaced along with a new belt, but it still made noise on a cold startup. My mechanic who is a jag master tech and eats sleeps and breathes anything jag suggested the following. Get yourself a scotch brite pad, and fire up the car. With the car running VERY CAREFULLY press the scotch brite pad on the inside of the belt to clean off any debris or contaminates. Just make sure that you are very careful so you dont lose a finger. My car made the same noise no matter how much wd40 or belt dressing was sprayed on it. I tried this solution and it worked great. Just make sure you are very very careful not to get a finger sucked into a pulley. Save your beers for after the job is done!

No offense, but who in their right mind would stick their fingers near the belts while the car is running?
If my belts squeal, I either tighten them up, or (if the previous didn't work) replace them. There's no use risking fingers or hands to try a "quick fix." Just my opinion...and I've been working on cars for 30 years.
