My guess is that his Jag tech didn't want to try it himself.

Maybe he's not as crazy as he seems.

However, if he were MY Jag tech? --->

lol. No offense AZ...just givin you a hard time.

thats why you use needle nose pliers, but not just the ribbed side but the back smooth side since its usually the slick side and smooth pulleys that cause a belt squeel

Well fellah's all I can say is that it worked. Use a pair of pliers or save the cold can of suds until after you finished the job lol

Default 96 xj6 making whistling sound when going over about 25mph

My 1996 XJ6 makes a whistling sound when i go over about 25 or 30 mph. At first i thought it might have been a belt, but then i realized it was coming from the back. I just had my brakes done and im thinking they might have put them on too tight. any ideas?

No way to install the brakes too tight. You may have a caliper sticking if you are feeling some funny feel to the brakes along with the noise. Doubtful that the two are related. Whistling is usually associated with some sort of wind noise; perhaps a window seal that's beginning to go.

a common windnoise issue back then was side mirror gaps. The line(gap) where the mirror housing pivots on the fixed base. It can sound like its coming behind you, so tape that gap and see if it stops. If not then inspect door seals and start taping gaps till you hit the whistle. Once you find it ill tell you how to fix em

Any one figure out anything definite that causes the squeal ? My 94 xj40 is doing same and getting worse . I have replaced the alternator thinking it was the bearing . Had repair guy tell me after that it may be a bushing the crankshaft rides on (?) . He's not a Jag guy but he has helped me out on a few basic repairs on it . It's actually getting bad now to where the belts look like they could jump off the pulleys when revving the engine. The A/C compressor is new as well . This used to only happen in cold weather at first startup , but now I can drive it an hour or more and it will come and go . Usually at slow speeds ,stop signs etc. Volt meter on dash will drop 15-20 seconds then go back to normal . Any ideas ?

Mr. Awilli:
there can be nothing "difinitive" since each of the recommendations can be a siurce of squeal. You must figure out what is squealing in yiour case and fix that . Oh, or check that the neighbor's pig isn't under the car.

Ok, guys, hell i way in on this one, i have a squeal too, but mine is none of the above!! Mine is coming from my upper right cooling fan, i can turn key on , with no start and the fan squeals, suspect shaft bearing on its way out, going to try to relube with some grafite, i was fooled thee for awhile tooo, replace belts, and pulley tensior on ac belt, belt dressign etc etc, but one morning just turned key on and there was noise, to make sure had teh wifey turn key while i was right there,, yeppp sure enough fan,,, got to change lower radiator hose anyway, so will fix then
