Hello I just bought a 97 xj6l it had a leaking hose when I got it. So I replaced it and filled with dextron. The power steering only works when you hold gas pedel down and idle the car fast. Auto Zone has a seal kit for the pump. Or should I get a new pump? Im looking for tips before I start dumping money at it. It also work a little when cold.
THANKS FOR ANY HELP
Get a new pump. It'll be better for you in the long run...and cheaper. And, I don't think they're very hard to change out in Jags.
When you run a power steering pump out of fluid (due to leaky hoses), there is less lubrication in the inner workings of the pump, and thus stuff wears out REAL quick (hence the reason it works only when you're idling fast).

Get the seal kit from motorcarsltd...they sell one and it'll be much better than the autozone one in my opinion. Though from my experience in the automotive field many autozone parts have been better than carquest parts...or do I just say crapquest?

Or maybe a secondhand pump.
These things normally last for ever being bathed in oil as they work. This is the first time I have ever read about a steering pump wearing out in over 40 years !!

^^^^ not when you work on them all day. Mine in the 96 leaked from the day i got it in 2000. But was small leak and i just cleaned and added a couple times a year. Till it starting whining alittle. Put in lucas ps conditioner and not only got quiet again, but totally stopped leaking
I replaced alot of pumps in Jaguar warranty for this same fault. Tech line always had us replace the steering control module but they never seem to fail. The pumps get weak and the revs help to get the pressure back up. The fluid filter/reservoir should be renewed when the pump is replaced, but sometimes you can replace the reservoir to get more flow to the pump, lessen the cavitation and get the pressure back up. The Lucas conditioner might cure the fault but a new filter might make the system last longer too.

I'm curious to know if you had the steering issue prior to replacing the leaky line? If not, your problem could be as simple as having air trapped in the system due to not bleeding it (you didn't mention bleeding after filling back up with power steering fluid).
Also our power steering pumps are expensive, and if you have bled the system, my vote is to def try the Lucas stuff before replacing parts as well. I use it in my Jag with 157,000 miles on it...the lines and pump are still original and it steers like buttah!
