Air stopped cooling, Took it to a garage and they said no freon. Started puting freon in and started to cool, then there was a pop and freon excaped, presumabably from the pop off valve down close to the compressor. (that is what I was told.) Guy said " I don't know how to fix it.

Took it another shop that does air condition repairs. He did the same thing and got the same results. Didn't know how to fix it . He said there was a blockage somewhere but didn't know how to find it.

Is there some way to diagnose this problem?

Just because you took it to a shop doesn't mean the certified guy did the work. Did they "evacuate" the system first? If not your problem could be pressure related. Just a thought, don't mean to step on any toes.

 

It is a pressure related problem. Just don't know how to test.

 

Hi Al, you may well know it is a pressure related problem but what about poor boy's point about evacuating the system?
When a system is re-gassed the procedure is always preceded by an evacuation of the system before the system is then re-filled.
Was this done by the garages you visited?
Only if you know this was done correctly can you move on to the diagnosis.

 

Yes it was evacuated. He then added oil and added freon, started cooling and then the pop off valve "popped" and started losing freon.

I think there are some pressure readings that would help but don't know what they are.

I thought I could find some advise as to tell this "repair man" where to start.

 

Hmm if you know jags and especially that car, youde know that issue is most commonly caused by a drier that came apart plugging the expansion valve with desicant. Its even happened on mine. Suck it down, pull off the line from the expansion valve to check for small plastic bb's inline. If thats the car blowout and clean the expansion valve, replace the drier and take off the line between the 2 and knock and blow out all the pellets inside. Then reassemble and recharge.. See if you take your car to someone that knows the car not just a system they might know this too.......
