Default Alarm issue.

Any thoughts on where to start looking to find the cause of my alarm intermittently going off? Sometimes it's fine for days and then it starts acting up.

Whether I lock the car with one or two presses on the fob it happens. Sometimes, when I lock the car with one press, the car gives the little single "cheep" which usually suggests that there is a door open, etc. Sometimes it doesn't "cheep". Either way, the result is the same.

I'm leaning towards a bad connection/earth on a door switch, something intermittent. Any thoughts appreciated.

I agree with what you are thinking.

I would start with trying to recreate the "chirp" that you get by operating the fob with doors / boot open. I only get that if the boot is open when I try to lock with the fob, and the chirp is a delayed reaction by a second or so after the locking. If there is a door open the fob does nothing, not even operate the locks.

Also be aware that the alarm can be programmed to chirp (but a different chirp) on every lock or unlock. Mine did that when I got it but it's so '90s. I turned it off some time ago.

If you think there might be an issue with the doors, try observing the puddle lamps on each door as it is opened and see if you spot any intermittent behaviour. AFAIK they use the same door open signal as the alarm.

Thanks for the input. These intermittent "nuisance" issues are a pain to sort out, so I suppose I will have to start removing door cards etc. I'll probably start with the boot, as in the past, I've noticed the amount of moisture that can get in behind the boot lock trim. This can cause some corrosion/rust on the switch/ boot release contacts.

Thanks again.

I have a 96 VDP which out of the blue started flashing the hazard lights while driving. At the same time, the dash lights became intermittent then dead. After driving 200K with the hazards on, I locked it and ten minutes later the alarm went off and wouldn't stop. I disconnected the battery, and it went back to normal, but drive for a while and it begins again, sometimes just the hazards, sometimes the alarm too. I should also say that the seat and steering column controls are dodgy too. I think two different problems. Thoughts? ray

It could be the bonnet switch causing problems
