Axle U Joint question
I have an outboard u joint on left side that is shot. Wondering if I can just replace u joint or do I need to pull axle half shaft to do that and so maybe just replace whole half shaft/joints with used one? Do I need to worry about the other side u joints or both sides bearings? 134K miles.

Jaguar lists the U-joint as NLA (No Longer Available), and they don't list the bearings as available separately. But I think I recall that the U-joints are a common size and can be replaced. You might try a google search for 1997 Jaguar U-joint. The differential was made by GKN and it's likely that the axles were also.
The Jaguar part number for the U-joint is JLM1388 and forum sponsor SNG Barratt lists them as available, and the other forum sponsors may also have them. A google or eBay search will turn up other options such as this (I have no experience with this seller):
Jaguar Saloon GKN U-Joint Euro Port Parts
The axles are the same on the XJ40s and X300s, and the U-joints are the same on the XJ40, XJS, X300, X100 and X308, and possibly others.
Cheers,
Don

Yep, joints can be replaced, but the shadt has to come out todo so.
K513XR is aftermarket part numberm use world wide. Same as the earlier Series Jags, nothing special.
I would do all 4, and ensure that they are greased annually.
If not, then at least grease the other 3.

Thanks for the replies. Does this mean I'll have to do wheel bearings as well? Wheel bearings seem nice and tight. Right side axle shaft has slightest play but near total u joint failure on left side.
The bearings are not expensive and they're not difficult to replace. Here are some photos of the job:
Rear Wheel Bearings Part 1 of 4
Rear Wheel Bearings Part 2 of 4

You'll also be halfway to having the diff output shaft out, and replacing the bearing and collar are also worth doing:
Differential Output Shaft Bearings Part 1 of 2
Differential Output Shaft Bearings Part 2 of 2
Cheers,
Don
