Yes I think you're right. In the old days Qty used to mean number required. I checked on the old fiche parts list (PDF) and it shows quantity as two. So I suspect one at the front of the gallery (as per diagram behind timing cover) and one at the back (behind gearbox).
Oh dear, so my mechanic has to tackle both ends of the oil gallery, meaning that he has to clear the front and the back of the engine block to gain access. Wonder if it is also time to do a major overhaul to justify the scale and cost of the repair to just replace the two sets of oil plug and O-ring. My reading of various Jaguar forums found failure of the O-ring in such places to be very rare. Maybe I should only deal with the one at the rear of the engine first, and keep my fingers crossed in respect of the one at the front.
I can perhaps not touch the one at the front and only deal with the one at the rear which cannot be tolerated. With the engine running and car raised, I can see oil running like stab wound so this explained why I lost 2.5 litres a few weeks ago before unnoticing oil on the floor, and maybe at the time the leak was much milder. The mechanic has warned that the car is undriveable until the leak is fixed, as oil is running down the underside of the car and blown farther to the rear. The car is due for an annual roadworthiness inspection so it will surely fail to re-licence unless the leak is addressed.
Oh, that's too bad. My transmission is still attached to the engine, so no real easy way to photograph the rear O ring. I took some photos of the sender, and they really don't show any more than the photos you already have.
I'm about to have this o-ring behind the transmission looked at because I have a very similar complaint - a fairly major oil leak that comes from behind the starter. Engine has almost 330k kilometers on the clock.
Any extra bits of info out there? ie once the transmission is off is it easily accessible or does the flywheel also have to come off?

Thanks Robman25 and Parker. No, this has been dealt with in (c) of my Post #1 above. No more leak from there. The leak is a more serious one like bleeding from somewhere above the joining place between and engine and the gearbox sandwich plate, and near the starter, a mysterious spot beyond access and visibility.
